People from Hunan sometimes even jokingly relate the two – the fiery tempers that result from eating pepper at every meal provide a useful spark for revolution. The fact that most of the leaders of the communist revolution – from Mao Zedong to Liu Shaoqi to Hu Yaobang – were Hunanese is something that most people are very proud of, regardless of individual political beliefs. But revolution, unlike hot pepper, is not necessarily to the taste of all Hunanese.
