ABSTRACT
On June 28, 1914, in the Bosnian city Sarajevo, Gavrilo Princip, a nineteenyear-old Serb nationalist, shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. The assassination set off a chain of events that led to the most costly conflict the world had yet experienced. Nearly 40 million soldiers would be killed, wounded, or missing by the time World War I ended.
