ABSTRACT
Most Brazilians live in the southern part of the country or in the coastal cities. Although Brazil has a thriving economy, the inequality between its richest and poorest populations is among the worst in the world. This is a cause of some of its many severe social problems, including urban violence, homeless children, and the increasing spread of poorly serviced slums known as favelas.
