ABSTRACT

Turkey’s economic strength continued to grow through the turn of the twentyfirst century. It is a major agricultural producer in the region, and its industrial and technological sectors have been expanding rapidly. Today, its population is approximately 73 million, the majority of which are Turks; Kurds make up the largest minority. Turkey has applied for membership in the European Union (EU), reflecting the degree to which the nation has come to identify with Western cultures over Middle Eastern ones.
