World War II (1939-1945) In many ways, World War II was a continuation of the primary conflict of World War I between an ascendant, united German state and the European powers it threatened to eclipse. The Allies anticipated that Germany would seek to occupy the Middle East, primarily for its oil, but this never came to pass. Apart from three significant conflicts in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, and Iran, the region escaped the catastrophic destruction experienced by Europe and Russia.
