ABSTRACT
In Bangladesh, which declared independence from Pakistan in 1971, democratic institutions have survived similar perils. Although Communist states such as China have proved reluctant to introduce democratic elements into their political practice, democratic governments in Asia have wide-
spread international support and may continue to develop during the twenty-first century.
