ABSTRACT
Mediterranean coast, there are still nomadic populations who inhabit the desert regions to the south. Despite oil wealth and fertile soil, Algeria’s people are still quite poor by Western standards. In recent years, however, the government has made substantial efforts to diversify the economy and attract foreign investors, including a 2001 treaty with the European Union to lower tariffs and increase trade.
