ABSTRACT

SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA The forty-seven nations of sub-Saharan Africa face a variety of serious environmental issues, including air and water pollution, deforestation, soil erosion and diminished soil fertility, disease brought on by environmental factors, and decline in biodiversity. Diseases caused by environmental factors include respiratory illnesses due to pollution, pesticide poisoning, and malaria, whose increase is caused by a warming climate. Rapid population growth makes many of these problems worse, and extreme poverty leaves governments unable to deal with them effectively. As nations attempt to improve economic production, they often do so at the expense of the environment.
