ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The Internet is transforming the workplace, enabling unprecedented access to unlimited information on a twenty-four-hour, seven-day-a-week basis. The book explores Internet abuse, the troubling side of the Internet in the workplace. Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon extends a model of workplace deviance in general to specifically include unproductive Internet usage. The book examines problematic Internet usage. Problematic Internet usage is distinct from cyberloafing in the degree of severity. It characterizes promising transformational aspects of the Internet in the workplace. Elisabeth Bennett proposes that intranets are different from traditional information systems, signaling a shift from managing information to managing knowledge. Manuel Sánchez-Franco delves deeper into understanding the usability of Internet-based applications from an individual's perspective. Constant Beugré and Vivien Lim and Thompson Teo explore the role of organizational justice in mitigating dysfunctional cyber-behavior.
