ABSTRACT

The contemporary era of shifting employment arrangements invites more career self-management and greater individualized career support over the Internet. This study examines the usage of one such Web-based career support (WBCS) system, within an almost ideal setting for the usage of such technology: the information technology (IT) sector. The WBCS system was designed to support aspiring European IT professionals to make a career change toward or within the IT sector. A careful monitoring of the actual usage of the system showed, however, that full usage of the system was not reached. Although a large number of people signed up for the free-of-charge system, the actual usage of the system’s career functionalities was quite limited. In the discussion section, this discrepancy between assumed career support needs and actual use is explored.
