ABSTRACT

Prior research regarding employee technology use has produced varied findings. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss how and why technology in the workplace can have both positive and negative effects on employee productivity. The discussion will center on a model outlining the relationships between an individual’s psychological state,self-efficacy, deficient self-regulation, habitual use, and general use of computer technologies. A new component to the model is proposed with the addition of image management. The model attempts to explain how psychological state and image management relate both directly and indirectly to self-efficacy perceptions and unregulated Internet use and how, in turn, these variables influence use.
