Introduction

For many years, an interest in the long-term development of human society was faintly disreputable among both historians and sociologists. The very long term, however, has lately received distinctly new attention. This book is the outcome of collaboration between three authors—one economic historian and two sociologists—whose concern with long-term processes is of long standing.
