ABSTRACT

Children familiar with the game “Hot Lava” know that as soon as someone yells “hot lava!” any space becomes an obstacle course. If hot lava is invoked, every participant has to navigate around the lava without getting burned. If children are playing at home, this might mean hopping from couch to chair to floor pillow to the dog bed without touching the floor. If kids are on the playground, it might mean avoiding all the wood chips and staying only on the playground equipment. Stepping off the safe zones and onto the lava means being burned and losing the game. In this chapter, we use the metaphor of hot lava to talk about the response that some of us may have to issues that we may not be comfortable discussing.
