ABSTRACT

The chapters by Litzinger (this volume) and Minstrell, Anderson, and Li (this volume) offer a refreshing and thought-provoking perspective on systems thinking. Together, these chapters reconsider what constitutes necessary STEM educational objectives and focus on improving the methods and sequencing of STEM instruction. They also address the development of students’ abilities to think and reason scientifically and present strategies to better integrate assessment with instruction. These are arguably some of the most important issues in need of consideration by STEM researchers, educators, and policy makers.
