ABSTRACT

Why do I teach world history? I teach world history because I work in a school that is 65 percent nonwhite. I got tired of being unable to teach my students about where they came from, since the California standards for world history are not the best in terms of that process. The California standards are Euro-centric and deal only with rest of the world, if at all, in terms of European contact. India, for example, is dealt with (but not mentioned specifically) only in terms of the New Imperialism. What have I learned? I have learned to take a different look at all history. I have learned how to put things into a large framework and to think comparatively and over a long range of time.
