ABSTRACT
Human speech is a wonder. Words surround us from birth and, supplemented by gesture, link mother and child in a web of communication that grows more comprehensive and precise from day to day. Newborns catch on with amazing rapidity until, as full adults, they emerge with all the knowledge and skills needed to manage human affairs and reproduce their kind, generation after generation.
