This chapter presents case studies which covers a wide range of subjects intended to explore some of the critical forces at work in the region and are representative of the globalizing processes shaping contemporary South Asia. Additional case studies, including ones on Afghanistan, on yoga, and on Indian occupied Kashmir, can be found on the Syracuse University website Global South Asia. The case studies examine the role of local and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in South Asia. Globalization has brought significant changes to several industries in South Asia. Consideration of the rights of tribal peoples has led the Indian government to rethink its forest management practices. NGOs, such as the Foundation for Ecological Security, studied here, have obtained funding to act as intermediaries between local communities and the government, especially its forestry department. The role of NGOs in civil society is amply demonstrated, as is the government's addressing, due to international pressures, the rights of local communities.
