ABSTRACT

Brownfields redevelopment is providing opportunities for urban revitaliza tion in American regions, particularly in older industrial areas where the reorganization and abandonment of industrial production left behind open tracts of land for redevelopment. Because brownfields in older industrial regions are often located in close proximity to central cities and even within the dense fabric of urban neighborhoods, they may be viewed as “commu nity assets,” opportunities for communities to reshape the environment of their future.
