ABSTRACT

With the outbreak of the Korean War, most artists evacuated Seoul and fled to the southern port city of Pusan or to their hometowns. Whereas the full extent of artistic activity in Pusan or elsewhere during the war is unverified and undocumented, there are surviving records of exhibition catalogs, reviews, articles, and memoirs of artists and writers. There are also records of military history compiled by the defense ministry that can be used to study and review the relationship between the Korean War and the visual arts.
