ABSTRACT

Given its profound impact on all aspects of life on the Korean peninsula today and its continuing irresolution, one could argue that the Korean War, directly or indirectly, touches upon almost all of the stories and characters in Korean films made over the past half-century. Among some of the most popular and highly respected films made by Korean directors are many that explore themes related to the Korean War: its setting, the war itself, and its legacies and impact on Korean life. It would be impossible in this brief chapter to address all of these films. So I have chosen to review three films in particular: The Taebaek Mountains, To the Starry Island, and Spring in My Hometown. *
