ABSTRACT
In many respects sociotechnical systems theory is the European counterpart of system 4 theory (see Chapter 8). It has been associated closely from its beginnings with the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations in London, just as system 4 theory has been associated with the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. Collaboration between these two organizations has been considerable over the years, including joint editorial responsibility for the journal Human Relations.
