ABSTRACT

Blau’s theory was developed in parallel with the Aston theory, but on the other side of the Atlantic. Both theories represent attempts to formulate hypotheses based on Weber (see Chapter 14 in this volume) and, having converted Weber to more readily testable form, to actually carry out the necessary research to test these hypotheses. The two programs were initiated during the 1960s and reached the publication phase at much the same time. Each theory cites the other, but the two appear to have evolved independently.
