ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the historical achievements and ongoing challenges of military leadership they are both glorious and sometimes tragic. Courage, a subtrait of character. Physical courage is supported by physical fitness and an awareness of one's physical capabilities, but there is no guarantee that a physically fit person will choose to engage in a courageous act. Moral courage takes the military leader to the crossroads of decision making. In many cases, it presents the dilemma of deciding among a range of bad options. To a young corporal who is a fire team or squad leader, the concept of leadership is quite black and white. Direct leadership is the leadership that occurs at the eyeball level. Organizational leadership generally begins at the regimental level and continues to the highest operational level, although there is some overlap between the higher echelons of the organizational level and the strategic level. Strategic leadership occurs at the highest levels of the government and the military.
