ABSTRACT

Effective leadership of any enterprise requires basic understanding of the goals and objectives of the endeavor and of the resources or assets that are available to accomplish the purpose of the organization. This chapter provides the basic background and emphasizes the value that improved knowledge management can provide to the enterprise, and then highlights a few of the mental models that are commonly associated with efforts to introduce changes to knowledge management strategies and practices. It provides some concrete examples of effective knowledge management interventions. Implicit knowledge is knowledge that can be codified but has not yet been made explicit. A virtual factory (VF) is comprised of all manufacturing lines at multiple sites running the same process and producing the same product. Tacit knowledge is not codifiable and remains with the individual who developed it through a combination of formal learning and experience.
