ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the problem of data-quality management in data warehousing by describing its introduction at a financial services company. The chapter presents how to manage the quality of data and explain the concept of proactive data-quality management as a comprehensive approach, which includes the strategic and operational level. On the basis of proactive data-quality management, the chapter provides experiences for developing a data-quality strategy, for data-quality planning and controlling, as well as for establishing appropriate organizational processes and structures. The organizational concept is complemented by a rule-based software system for monitoring the quality of data. The reactive data-quality improvements and proactive data-quality management are important measures for improving data quality. Data-quality management defines a data-quality policy and data-quality strategy, as well as data-quality objectives, processes, and responsibilities. Data-quality management is realized through established data-quality management processes, like data-quality planning, data-quality control, and routines for dealing with data-quality problems.
