ABSTRACT

Abstract: Interoperability has been identified as a major issue to be addressed by every e-government initiative. In order to tackle this issue, e-government agencies have developed tools to facilitate the interchange of information between agencies when providing public services to citizens and businesses through the Internet. The tools are called e-government frameworks within the scope of this chapter. The chapter presents the cases of three e-government agencies in Europe and the United States that have developed these frameworks, which are classified as interoperability frameworks or enterprise architecture frameworks. Concrete applications of the frameworks as catalysts of cross-agency interoperability are presented for each agency. The chapter concludes with a comparative analysis that shows the common features of and the differences between both types of frameworks.
