ABSTRACT
On the eve of presidential elections in Ukraine, October 30, 2004, the British journal the Economist predicted that these elections would have far-reaching consequences for the global balance of power, particularly for relations between the West and Russia. These elections, it claimed, were the West’s last hope of stopping the specter of Soviet geopolitics, and of opening the road to democracy for Russia and thus the entire post-Soviet space. 1
