ABSTRACT

The purpose of the classification scheme is to provide a lens through which people can better understand the capabilities of, and relationships among, collaboration technologies. When comparing and classifying collaboration technologies, it is useful to distinguish which capabilities are present, which are absent, and which can be configured to adapt to variations of need. It also proposes a classification scheme for collaboration technologies based on capabilities and attributes. Classifying Collaboration Technologies draws attention to key attributes by which one can compare, contrast, and select among groupware technology implementations. One can use this classification scheme to analyze, compare, and contrast the capabilities offered by groupware products while simultaneously comparing and contrasting important implementation choices in products within or across classification categories. The goal in developing these classification schemes was to address the challenge of understanding and selecting among various collaboration technologies.
