ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the extant research on management and organization issues related to China's emerging domestic private sector. It reviews the literature published in twenty-four leading English-language academic journals over the eighteen years from 1986 through 2003. The chapter identifies ninety-two articles related to China's private businesses and characterizes them along two dimensions: the subject of study and the research methods employed. It also identifies a set of leading English-language academic journals that publish China-related management and organization research. The chapter develops a comprehensive database of articles related to management and organization issues of China's domestic private business over the 1986-2003 period. It analyzes the research issues, methods, and key conclusions of these studies. The chapter clarifies gaps in the literature and suggests some areas for future research. It argues that the institutional transition from a relationship-based transaction structure to a rule-based competition structure is already in progress in China.
