ABSTRACT
Teaching Southeast Asian history poses special problems for both the teacher and the student, not least because it seems so complex and so distant from any familiar frame of reference. Yet themes can be identified which apply equally to each of the countries and cultures of the region and also have a more universal, area-wide applicability.
