ABSTRACT
China is one of the world’s oldest continuous civilizations and the dominant cultural center of East Asia. With a flourishing philosophical political, economic, artistic, and scientific tradition, it developed a strong identity as a universalistic civilization. For the last century and a half, China has been faced with the challenge of forging a new identity and of redefining its cultural values in a modern world.
