ABSTRACT

In his work as an ornithologist ob serving birds in New Guinea, Jared Dia-mond also observed people. See ing how hazardous tribal life was there, he concluded that New Guineans had to be more intelligent than most other people in order to survive. That conclusion set red lights flashing in my brain. I won dered if Jared Diamond had ever thought about the hazards of life in inner-city ghettos of the United States while observing birds there, or observing birds while trying to cross the street in Rome.
