ABSTRACT

I sometimes read that the Democrats have no new ideas. What could be more novel than restoring the idea of working for the well-being of everybody? Krugman remembers the old days when the idea was com monplace in politics. So do I, and thought at the time that the future was upward from the New Deal. It is, but the future was delayed a whole electoral era, some thirty-five years, by the Great Divergence.
