Acomparison of the presidencies of Franklin Roosevelt and Barack Obama is instructive. Roosevelt didn’t find a way to end the economic crisis of the 1930s until
everybody got a job as a worker or a soldier thanks to the voracious demand of world war. Yet Roosevelt remained popular throughout the twelve years and forty days of his presidency. He was elected four times and a Democratic majority in Congress was elected along with him.
