ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses issues raised in all four sections of the Mentor Standards, especially section 1 (personal qualities), section 2 (teaching) and section 3 (professionalism) and section 4 (self-development and partnership). In recent years, however, there has been a clear movement towards training routes which are based predominantly in school. These routes include Teach First and School Direct. There is also a growing number of centres offering school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT). The chapter considers the strengths and challenges of these routes and offers checklists for mentors working within them or, indeed, thinking of setting them up. In setting up a school-based training system, schools have to consider many pressing issues. It might be helpful to evaluate the current norms of teacher training routes and to consider how schools, probably working in collaboration with universities, can match those norms, or improve upon them.
