ABSTRACT

The Kelabit Highlands in the heart of Borneo are the traditional lands of the indigenous Kelabit people. In 1944, ‘Z Special Force’ member Major Tom Harrisson (anthropologist, archaeologist and a member of Mass Observation) parachuted into the Plain of Bah, where, from the village of Bario, he organised and led the Kelabit people in a campaign against the Japanese. The isolated tropical highlands of Borneo had become part of the theatre of modern warfare.
