Key messages • There has been a general increase in the production of staple crops such as maize, millet,
sorghum and groundnut in the basin, though there have been strong year-to-year fluctuations in the growth rate, linked in part to variable weather conditions. The agricultural sector growth is generally far below the 6 per cent Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) target for African countries.
