ABSTRACT

Key messages • Across the Volta Basin, actual yield level for rain-fed maize and millet as a percentage of

potential yield under water limitation ranges from 17 to 29 per cent and 19 to 40 per cent respectively. Foregone yields in Burkina Faso and Mali as a result of land degradation exceed current annual cereals production of 6-8 million tons per year. There is a compelling case for sustainable intensification (SI) of smallholder farming systems in the basin to close the yield gap and address ecosystem degradation challenges.
