ABSTRACT

After an initial mention of Barsoum’s four categories of Syriac poetry and an outline of Syriac poetic form, an overview is given of the main poets from the late fourth to the fourteenth century, and of translations into Syriac of Greek poetry. Finally, brief attention is given to terminology, to some special features (notably rhyme and acrostics), and to the few Syriac writers who wrote on Syriac poetry, ending with a note on poetry in Modern Syriac.
