      ABSTRACT

Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) and Public Service Media (PSM) in Europe are more than ever changing rapidly. Digitization, convergence, internationalization and globalization are the key words for the shifting mediascape. Nevertheless, the situation across European countries is very diverse, not the least as a result of the economic crisis and the ways in which it has been affecting public broadcasters. The convergence between media, telecommunications and computing necessitates new strategies that keep the balance between policies for mass audiences and fragmented audiences at the same time. As any service in the multiplatform communication system, PSM have to encompass the characteristics of mobility, time-shifting, on-demand personalization and social sharing. Beyond that, PSB, which is by tradition and denition a national undertaking, have to answer to diversity requirements in migrating societies and respond to the Europeanization of public spheres.
