ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights key issues relating to dyslexia and bi/multilingualism, and indicates how culturally and linguistically appropriate material can be accessed for an accurate assessment. It discusses processes and strategies relating to assessment and intervention/teaching strategies. Multilingualism is an area that can present a challenge to those involved in assessment and teaching of children and adults with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs). It also presents a challenge to trainers, as there is a considerable need for specialised training courses on dyslexia and SpLD. The term 'culture-fair' was used by The British Psychological Society (BPS) in their Working Party Report. The report emphasised the importance of culturally relevant materials for children with dyslexia and, particularly, culture-fair assessment. Dyslexia, the report suggests, may be 'masked by limited mastery of the language of tuition'. It was also acknowledged in the report that dyslexia can occur across languages, cultures, socioeconomic status, race and gender.
