ABSTRACT

The domain of instructional design and technology (IDT) brings people together through shared ideas, methods, and practices as we address needs encountered in the use of technology for learning. Systems planning models, instructional theory, constructivist learning principles, and computer-based and Web-based learning environments-each has played a role in guiding the use of technology for learning over the years and bringing a sense of coherence to the field. A problem arises though: sometimes our common-sense, conventional wisdom becomes a barrier to innovation and fresh thinking. We cling to old models beyond their usefulness. Every generation of professionals needs to reinvent the field as they cast aside certain ideas and practices, reinterpret others, and develop new ones based on emerging technologies and advancing knowledge.
