ABSTRACT

Digital technologies can be used during testing in a host of ways, from authoring items to reporting student results. The use of such technology in administering tests to students, commonly referred to as computer-based testing (CBT), and the uses and reporting of digital assessment data. This chapter provides an overview of the use of CBT in higher education. It overviews the potential CBT has for improving assessment systems in elementary, secondary, and higher education. The chapter describes possible future applications of CBT in higher education, with enough implementation details that readers get a sense of what is realizable and how it might impact them. It addresses how students with disabilities and students who are English learners are likely be affected by CBT in higher education. Scoring of student responses can be a time and resource-consuming process. A fair test provides all students with equivalent opportunity to demonstrate their relevant knowledge and skills, thus supporting accurate, bias-free inferences about them.
