ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues related to testing and evaluation of English-language learners (ELL) in higher education. It explains how to define the ELL population in higher education, followed by a brief treatment of the general issues related to testing and evaluation of ELL students in that context. The chapter also discusses several major topics related to testing ELL students in higher education. These include college entrance exams, English language class placement exams, tests in English language classes and evaluation of such classes/programs, and testing ELL students in academic subject classes. The term English-language learners or ELL students was first popularized in the context of K-12 education. Issues related to testing ELL students can be classified broadly into two categories: testing ELL students for academic subjects; and testing ELL students for English proficiency in the four domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, for identifying or classifying ELL students.
