ABSTRACT
At one time intercity rail transport was the pre-eminent means of travel for longdistance trips. With the advent of the automobile, rail began to lose market share; air transport further eroded rail’s position. Up through World War II, however, rail remained a major mode of intercity passenger transportation throughout the world.
