ABSTRACT

The Green Revolution had its origin in Mexico, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation and the federal government of Mexico which aims to develop the seeds for crops presented as critical in the battle to end world hunger. The stakeholder interview for the Mexican case study carries some key findings: the controversy over GM maize which came to prominence in the journal Nature reporting the flow of transgenes into wild maize populations, it presents a fieldwork research with mainly smallholder farmers and other stakeholders in the Lake region, reports the results of interviews with a variety of local stakeholders and provides reports on findings from a laboratory ethnography conducted at the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity. Stakeholders recognised the regulatory systems and frameworks in Mexico on GM crops and the regulator pointed out that there is a lack of capacity and resources within the governmental department. They highlight the need for increasing the grain production in Mexico in international markets.
