ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the China'S GM controversy insights offered by the GMFuturos project that are refreshing for many who watches the political debates unfold across the 'rising powers' more than a decade in the absence of clear empirical data on the perspectives of citizens in the nation. It provides a brief account of what people know about policies, public attitudes and decision-making on genetically modified (GM) food and crops in the country when focused on 'rising powers'. China provides an comparison to the other 'rising powers' because of its scale, its growing leadership in agricultural science and technology and to the challenges it face around the commercialisation of GM food. International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) attempts to broaden the inputs to technology assessment and also the impossibility of reaching consensus on contentious issues - such as the potential contribution of GM crops in agricultural sustainability at global level.
