ABSTRACT

This chapter draws attention to a specific framework used to develop experiences that empower children to be personally and socially responsible. First, it offers a portrait of sport and physical activity programs that have focused on fostering personal and social responsibility. The chapter also discusses In-school, after-school, and community-based programs. Special attention is given to programs guided by Don Hellison's Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model (TPSR) a nationally and internationally acclaimed model used in sport-based youth development programs. A common theme that runs through all of these programs is that given the right guidance all children are capable of becoming what Robert Coles calls "good people". The chapter views evaluation in a way that promotes principles of positive youth programming, some guided prescriptions, some ways to problem solve, and a variety of ideas for sustaining quality programming.
