ABSTRACT

Sport, as a context for youth development, has been studied for nearly a century, and delves into social and environmental factors associated with youths' psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. "Old Wine in a New Bottle" suggests that nearly a century of research on youth development through sport was a prelude to the contemporary positive youth development (PYD) framework. This chapter reflects on how PYD is not an entirely new idea for the sport domain, given the scientific tradition of youth sport psychology studies. By the same token, It highlights that PYD assets, processes, and outcomes inform sport researchers to go beyond descriptive studies to envision intervention and evaluation designs that reveal processes and mechanisms of change. The chapter also concludes by reflecting on how "old wine" and "new bottle" approaches collectively inform us about what we know, what we do not know, and what we need to know to maximize the benefits of youths' experiences in sport.
