ABSTRACT

Bring your own device (BYOD) is a term used to describe a scheme whereby pupils bring their own devices into school to facilitate their learning. There are many different BYOD implementation strategies that may be adopted by a school. To further understand the key issues around such implementations, it may be useful to consider an example of what this looks like in practice through a model scenario. There are a range of issues concerning mobile devices in schools, which pertain to: classroom management concerning the use of devices in lessons; understanding the pedagogical potential of new tools, which takes time to explore and develop for classroom implementation; understanding the research and evidence base that indicates an impact on learning; and justifying and defending the school's decision to move to a BYOD policy. BYOD needs integrating into a whole school approach to technology, which has learning and pedagogical application at its heart.
